It is so great to see that others love the Argus as much as I do! I was onboard the Argus from 1979 to 1986. I went to Catalina, San Clemente and/or Anacapa every single weekend for a period of 2 years straight once. Back then we didn't have to wear any safety gear when we climbed aloft. Talk about scary at times...like the trips to San Francisco and Anacapa Island..remember sailing all night in a storm...freezing waves crashing from bow to stern and having to go aloft to tack. Fortunately,we never lost anyone...okay, maybe their stomach! Gross! We had some really old captains too who seemed to like to yell alot...Reg Glahn, Doc Adams, Brian Fury, Norm Jobes...Andy Fitzpatrick was in charge of the base at that time. We loved to hang out on his front lawn and beg him to let us take a boat out for a sail. Did you ever hang a botswain chair over the side and ski with it? Bet that's too dangerous to do now too! I know my lifes path was determined by the times spent at the base and on the Argus. I'd love to have some sort of "alumni" party where we could share pictures and talk about those "good ole times" on the Argus. By the way Sue I remember you! Maybe you remember me and...Roxanne, Tycho, Greg, Dale, Todd, Tom, Charolette, Sail, Cavin, Bob, etc...? SHSgallagher@hotmail.com

I have no new news on Argus; however, the ASTA Annual Conference on Sail Training and Tall Ships is starting Sunday, November 5th and will run through Wednesday the 8th and one of the individuals that was very involved with Argus will be attending and presenting about giving more Sea Scouts and Boy Scouts life changing sail training experiences. You can find a post about this session on the ASTA Conference Blog at http://tallships.wordpress.com/2006/10/02/a-treasure-chest-youth-groups-to-go/.

If I learn anything new about Argus, I'll be sure to post an entry on Tall Ships Today!

Thanks and fair winds,
Peter

I was so saddened to hear what is happening with Argus. I grew up at the Sea Base and was a member of the Argus crew in 1979/80, before moving over to Triton.

My memories of crossings to Catalina are vivid - including the time I let the day tanks run dry in the middle of the shipping channel!

I was fortunate to charter her on San Francisco Bay in 1984 and got to cross beneath the Golden Gate Bridge under full sail. Truly a highlight in my memories.

I see the article saying Argus was headed for Mr. Ettel's boatyard is dated last June. Is there an update as to what is happening?

Just felt like commenting on something this near and dear to me. I crewed on the Argus from the time I was twelve until I was twenty and nearly every week as a summer job from 1999-2003. It was an unbelievable experience, and I don't even know the words to express how I feel about the fact that I will never have the chance to sail aboard her again.

The Argus experience was a truly incredible one, without a doubt she can never truly be replaced and will be sorely missed.

Oh my god! I was just randomly searching for some info on the ship, since I had sailed on it back in 1995 as an explorer scout and was shocked to learn that it was no longer in use! I have amazing memories from that weekend and hope it can become some sort of exhibit because I know it has touched many peoples' lives.

The Ocean Institute is probably best to answer this directly. If you take a chance, good luck!
