This past Labor Day, the 205 ft. ASTA member vessel, Bark Elissa welcomed the United States Navy’s newest nuclear submarine, the USS Texas into Galveston Harbor. It was an incredible spectacle to behold as the old ushered in the new with true Texas-size pomp and circumstance.

The Elissa had many VIP’s onboard including First Lady Laura Bush who officiated the christening ceremony of the USS Texas later in the day. The new submarine’s Captain John Litherland, was quoted with saying that it was his dream come true to be able to sail in company with a tall ship.I just wish that our tall ship fleet had even half the budget of the new submarine’s price tag – a whopping three billon dollars!

The USS Texas will be home ported in Groton, Connecticut.
